Agenda Items

  1. Reports
    • Membership Report-Audrey Batchelder
      • Audrey reported that there are currently 503 members. 134 are also members of VRTA, 70 are members of District C, and 133 members have email addresses. Of the 142 retirees this year, over 30 have already joined.
    • Treasurer's Report-Dale Waldrop
      • Dale reported that we are solvent and presented a proposed budget for 2001-2002. It was suggested that there be $100 more allocated for postage. Bulk mailing and presorted first class options were discussed. The budget was approved as amended.
    • Communications Report-Elsie Pelfrey (newsletter) and Linda MacCleave (web site)
      • Elsie reported that the newsletter is partially subsidized by Bruce Adie, who posted an ad in two of the newsletters last year. Swift sent out letter to new retirees and to those whose membership is about to expire with a shocking pink reminder. Elsie would like trips to be reported to her for the next newsletter, due to come out the first week of October.
      • Linda reported that the web site was up and running at no cost to the organization. Elsie will be submitting information for the History link soon, and more information will be placed on the legislative link with information provided by Nelson Taylor. Elsie noted that Audrey's highlights of June's meeting had not been posted, and Linda agreed that the note would be placed there. The web site address, http://www.cvco.org/education/hrsp/ will be placed on the newsletter and all communications from HRSP.
    • VRTA-Nancy Harris
      • Nancy reported that the VRTA Fall Workshop would be held September 26 from 9 to 2 at Imperial Plaza. AARP will pay for five of our members to go (or an average of 5 from each district). The state meeting in Blackstone will be October 8-9. We have been asked to have a flag to represent our district for that. It was decided that former art teachers would be contacted to design a flag. Linda asked that the design be passed on to her for the web site. The District C meeting will be held October 17 in Chesterfield County. Elsie announced that there was a new editor for the state newsletter, The Broadcast.
  2. New Retirees' Reception
    • The new Retirees' Reception will be held on September 6, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at St Martin's Episcopal Church. Dodie Corpening will be in charge of the hospitality, with board members participating as hosts and hostesses. Elsie will send invitations to all 2001 retirees. A discussion of what should be put on the invitation in order to entice new retirees to join, it was concluded that the main emphasis should be on the social aspect of the event and in joining. Information on the organization will be provided through flyers with membership forms. Board members will make personal calls to retirees to encourage them to come to the reception some time after August 10.
  3. Meeting Dates/Locations/Speakers
    • Our next meeting will be November 1. The location has not yet been decided, but the Cultural Arts Center is being considered. Recommended speakers included Randy Wright, a teacher who is working to change the back of the dollar bill, and David Martin, Superintendent of Schools in Williamsburg. If board members have other ideas, calls should be made to Elsie or Swift.
  4. Projects/Committees
    • JoAnn McCabe discussed the Hilliard House. Five volunteers are needed for five students to help with homework at 6:45 on Wednesdays.
    • Elsie Pelfrey announced that With Our Youth program would continue this year and our support of the Christmas Mother.
  5. Nominating Committee
    • Swift appointed Gordon Sandridge, A.P. Hill, Linda MacCleave, and Audrey Batchelder to serve as a nominating committee to provide a slate of officers for president and vice president, the two offices that are up for renewal. The slate will be presented at the November 1 meeting.
  6. Miscellaneous
    • Thomas Folly mentioned the methods used by other organizations to provide scholarships. He plans to write a proposal outlining all these methods in order for the HRSP to determine which would be best. Dodie Corpening asked if the organization could develop a plan for helping young people to see teaching as a career and to change the way young teachers perceive teaching.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
