Dear HRSP Members,
We did have a delightful meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 2001. "The
Place" at Innsbrook was the site of the meeting which began with
the mingling of friends and ex-co-workers followed by a very delicious
luncheon.
Our president, Swift Williams, proudly introduced his cousin,
Lt. Colonel Barry Nelson Nash, MD, U.S Army who has been
a member of the White House Medical Unit for several years. His
interesting speech gave us insight into the duties of the Medical
Unit which serves all members of the President's and Vice President's
families. Service of the team is not confined to Washington, D.C.,
but also includes national and international travel. Lt. Colonel
Nash had very complimentary things to say about teachers, and as
a family practicioner who has also done some teaching, he is planning
to continue his career in that vein after his tour of duty at the
White House ends.
A short business meeting followed. Nelson Taylor, the Legislative
Chairman for the Virginia Retired Teachers' Association and the
HRSP announced the good news that pre-1980 retirees who retired
with considerably less compensation will be receiving additional
benefits beginning in July. The VRTA will continue to work toward
goals to improve the lot of current and future retirees. Audrey
Batchelder reported that as of June 12, 2001 HRSP has 478 members.
Nancy Harris reported that 122 of the HRSP members are also
VRTA members, and 46 are District C members. She encouraged our
members to join these other levels of membership.
Elsie Pelfrey, the AARP liason for VRTA, announced that
all are invited to AARP DAY at the Science Museum of Virginia on
Saturday, August 11, 2001 from 12:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. At 1:00 P.M.,
Dr. Walter Witschey, the Museum's Director, will deliver a welcome
and lecture "What the Future Holds for Us". Enjoy light refreshments
and a Special Attraction: The IMAX film "Journey into Amazing Caves".
Present your AARP membership card at the admissions desk to receive
a special discount for you and your guests - a combination ticket
for $9.00 per person covering all the special events that day including
scheduled lecture, all exhibits, and the IMAX Film "Caves".
Jo Ann Troy, our vice-president announced that the fall
meeting will be held at Willow Country Club on November 1, 2001.
We hope to see you there. Linda MacCleave, our secretary
and HRSP Web Site designer, encourages you to check it out - construction
is moving right along! If you haven't seen it lately, you will be
amazed at the wonderful job she has done. The site's address is
http://www.cvco.org/education/hrsp. Hope to see you all on November
first!
