The Richmond Peace Education Center (RPEC) was founded in 1980. Our mission is to promote peace and social justice in our community and around the world. RPEC works with schools, religious institutions, local governments and individuals throughout the Richmond area. We offer a range of programs, including training in conflict resolution techniques. We also provide support for other local organizations working towards a more peaceful world.

Stories, Jokes and Bits of Wisdom

Late Night Humor - Courtesy of Phil Bailey (and others):

Finally, a candidate who can explain the Bush administration's positions on civil liberties in the original German." -- Bill Maher, on Schwarzenegger running for Governor.

"President Bush is supporting Arnold but a lot of Republicans are not, because he is actually quite liberal. Karl Rove said if his father wasn't a Nazi, he wouldn't have any credibility with conservatives at all." Bill Maher

"They're saying Arnold will get 95% of the vote. At least according to his brother, Jeb Schwarzenegger." Craig Kilborn

"President Bush has been silent on Schwarzenegger. Of course, he can't
pronounce Schwarzenegger." David Letterman

"Here's how bad California looks to the rest of the country. People in
Florida are laughing at us." Jay Leno

"Well, we're all excited because President Bush has started his 35-day
vacation. He's down there in Crawford, Texas and on the first day of his vacation he went fishing. He didn't find any fish but he believes they're there and that his intelligence is accurate." David Letterman

The United States is putting together a Constitution now for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It's served us well for 200 years, and we don't appear to be using it anymore,so what the hell?" Jay Leno

"President Bush held his first full press conference in over five months this week. He announced that the war on terrorism is continuing, much, much more work needs to be done on the economy, and Saddam Hussein has not yet been captured. And then he said,

'I'm going on vacation for a month.'" Jay Leno

"President Bush is leaving to go to Crawford, Texas, for a 35-day working vacation. This should go over big with all the people taking a can't-get-work vacation." David Letterman

"The White House says that the vacation in Texas will give President Bush the chance to unwind. My question is, when does the guy wind?" David Letterman

"President Bush's economic team is now on their jobs and growth bus tour all across America. I think the only job they created so far is for the guy driving the bus." Jay Leno

"President Bush has refused to declassify portions of the congressional 9/11 reports about the Saudis, because he says it will help the enemy. Not Al Qaeda, the Democrats." Jay Leno

You'd Better Forward This! (and you need sound)

Wage Peace - by Judyth Hill, written 9-11-2001 (courtesy of my daughter, Mary)

Wage peace with your breath.
Breathe in firemen and rubble, breathe out whole buildings
and flocks of red wing blackbirds.
Breathe in terrorists
and breathe out sleeping children and freshly mown fields.
Breathe in confusion and breathe out maple trees.
Breathe in the fallen and breathe out lifelong friendships intact.
Wage peace with your listening: hearing sirens, pray loud.
Remember your tools: flower seeds, clothespins, clean rivers.
Make soup.
Play music, learn the word for thank you in three languages.
Learn to knit, and make a hat.
Think of chaos as dancing raspberries.
Imagine grief as the out breath of beauty or the gesture of fish.
Swim for the other side.
Wage peace.
Never has the world seemed so fresh and so precious.
Have a cup of tea and rejoice.
Act as if armistice has already arrived.
Don't wait another minute.

Saturday September 11th, 2004
8:42 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Family Peace Festival 2004 is Saturday September 11th from 8:42 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Bon Air United Methodist Church, 1645 Buford Road.  Several faith communities in the area are organizing this event.  Representatives from Bon Air United Methodist Church, the Islamic Center of Virginia, Midlothian Friends Meeting, the Baha’is of Richmond, the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond, Richmond Peace Education Center, Richmond Mennonite Fellowship, and other groups are involved.
We will start with an interfaith worship service of remembrance and hope. We will have children of different faiths involved in the service.  Our slogan and theme for the day is “Peace Begins at Home” and our main focus is children and their caregivers.
The event will include seminars, arts and crafts, and activities for children.  The seminars are for parents and children and address issues such as Peace and Islam, How to Be a Good Father, Peace and the Legislative Process, and others.  Each seminar will last approximately 20 minutes and will be presented several times during the day.  An arts and crafts area will be available to make several art projects, such as peace cranes and murals.  Games and activities will be set up for children of all ages to learn and play.  Food will be available for a cash lunch.  Also, there will be informational booths set up by groups from the various faith organizations and other child centered groups.
The stage, our Platform for Peace, will have several performances that will rotate during the day.  Finally a peace concert for the entire family will
end this unique multi-faith event.  Please join us for what is sure to be a special day.
