Mission Statement and Membership Information
The Virginia Society for the Photographic Arts is dedicated to promoting
art created through photographic processes. VSPA provides public exposure
to photography as a fine art form and encourages the development of
photographers. Membership is open to all persons interested in fine art
photography, both practitioners (regardless of level of accomplishment) and
patrons. The society is a not-for-profit artist organization originally
established in Charlottesville in 1975. Members live in all parts of the
state. VSPA sponsors programs that are a vital part of the cultural life of
Virginia.
It is VSPA's desire to advance visual communication and to establish a
broadly based sharing of personal vision. To further these endeavors, the
society works with exhibitors to organize exhibitions with members as well
as other nationally known photographers. The newsletter includes
reviews and critiques of exhibitions as well as items concerning members'
activities, and upcoming events. VSPA cosponsors with museums, galleries
and universities a wide range of exhibitions, lectures and workshops around
the state. Some of the most prominent artists, curators, and critics in
photography have been involved in these events. Members make a significant
contribution to these programs by their financial support and by their
participation in the society's activities. VSPA receives support from the
corporate community and
the Virginia Commission for the Arts. VSPA seeks the involvement of
minority
and disabled artists.
Lectures:
VSPA cosponsors artist lectures with museums, universities, and galleries.
Noted photographers who have participated in VSPA sponsored events are
Aaron Siskind, Joyce Tenneson, Emmet Gowin, Ralph Gibson, Olivia Parker,
Marilyn Nance and Sally Mann. Collector William Hunt, Sotheby's Denise
Bethel, and Deborah Willis of the Smithsonian were recent VSPA guest
speakers. In the 1990s, with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, VSPA
cosponsored a symposium, "Photographers as Artists, Issues in the
'80's". The symposium brought together for a day long event, Van Deren
Coke, Joel-Peter Witkin, Sally Eauclaire, Director The Museum of
Contemporary Photography; and Ann Hoy, Curator International Center for
Photography, for lectures, panel discussion, and interaction with
participants.
Exhibitions:
VSPA works with Museums, Galleries and Arts Organizations to organize
exhibitions around the state. Exhibitions have involved sponsoring three
national juried traveling shows titled "Freshwork" and member
exhibitions in several parts of the state. Recently, VSPA had shows of
members work at the Greater Reston Arts Center, curated by Susanne Arnold,
Executive Director, and the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center in Hampton, Va.,
curated by Brooks Johnson, Photography Curator at the Chrysler Museum. The
Society works with exhibitors to help organize exhibitions with members as
well as, other nationally known photographers, such as Sally Mann, Marilyn
Nance, and Olivia Parker among others. In the fall of 1997, VSPA organized
a major show of digital imagery with 1708 Gallery in Richmond, VA. VSPA has
organized exhibits in alternative spaces such as vacant stores in Sixth
Street Marketplace in Richmond, Va. VSPA brings fine art photography to a
broad audience through it's exhibition program.
Workshops:
VSPA workshops are conducted by professional artists in their particular
area of expertise. A workshop, open to public registration, by noted Texas
photographer Jim Newberry and a Polaroid workshop for the disadvantaged are
examples of VSPA's efforts to involve a wide range of people in
photographic activity. For professional artists, VSPA organized workshops
like "A Practical Guide to a Career as a Fine Art Photographer"
held at Virginia Commonwealth University. This workshop by Harold Simon,
Publisher of Photo Opportunity, and Alan Klotz, Owner of Photocollect
Gallery in NYC, provided photographers with information on business and
legal matters, as well as a portfolio review.
